In partnership with CA State Parks and California State Library, the Orange Public Library now offers two Explorer Kits for checkout: Hiking and Birdwatching. These backpack kits are intended to make outdoor experiences accessible to everyone by providing books, equipment, and safety information to beginner-level explorers.
Hiking Kit contents:
- Dry Backpack
- Binoculars
- Camping Lantern
- Compass
- Pocket Outdoor Survival Guidebook
- Hiking is Fundamental Book
- Several guides to California plants, birds, animal tracks, and more.
Birdwatching Kit contents:
- Dry backpack
- Binoculars
- Monocular Telescope
- Camping Lantern
- Compass
- Pocket Outdoor Survival Guidebook
- Joy of Birding Book
- Several guides to California birds, wildlife, and more.
How do I check out an Explorer Kit?
- Kits are intended for 18 years of age or older.
- Explorer Kits check out for 3 weeks and may be renewed up to 4 times if there are no holds.
- Explorer Kits may be placed on hold by visiting any Orange Public Library location, or by calling the Reference Desk at (714) 288-2410.

How do I return an Explorer Kit?
- Borrowers must return Explorer Kits in-person during open hours to the Lending Services Desk at the Orange Public Library & History Center, or to the One Desk at the Taft or El Modena Branch Libraries.
- Explorer Kits may not be returned in any book drop. Doing so may result in borrower incurring fees for any damages.
- Borrower is responsible for any lost or damaged equipment.
